Happy Friday! Because of our "light dusting of snow" last week, our Holiday Shoppe was rescheduled for tomorrow. It will be from 8:00 - 12:00. Auditions for the talent show for 4th and 5th graders will be Monday right after school at 2:30. Students must be picked up at 4:30.
We have finished multi-digit multiplication in math. When we return from the break we will be working on patterning, then move into partial quotient division. We had our reading test today. We have been reading about the effects of alcohol and tobacco on the body in health. When we return from the break, we will be learning about explanatory (how-to) writing in language arts. In science we have completed and tested our unit on sound and light. We will be switching back to social studies, focusing on colonies and the American Revolution.

There are lots of items in lost and found. Encourage your child to check for missing items, they will be donated soon. If your child is in need of any school supplies, they make great holiday gifts!

Don't forget - our holiday celebration will be next Tuesday at 11:00 - 12:00. Thanks to our room moms; Jennifer Cowan, and Nancy Hart!

Welcome to the storm before the holiday break! We have been very busy, and will get a lot more accomplished before we get to enjoy our well deserved time off. We have finished sound, and moved on to light in science. We will test sound and light together late next week. We have been working on comparing and contrasting in writing, students should be finishing their five paragraph essays early next week. We had our assessment on text structure in reading yesterday. We will be working on DRAs, and reading about drugs and alcohol in health next week. In math we are continuing area array model and box method multi-digit multiplication. Three links to videos were added to Love That Link, they show how to multiply using expanded form (each link begins with letter B). The steps are not identical to the way we teach, but they are very similar, and the concept is the same. We will test multi-digit multiplication next Thursday. The students will be able to choose what strategy they use to solve the problems (box method, area array model, bow-tie, or the standard algorithm).
We will be doing a multiplication timed test this week.

Students who were interested brought home information about our first science fair. The science fair is completely optional. This is from the top of the form:

The PTA Holiday Shoppe is this Saturday from 8:00 - 12:00. Our homeroom moms were very pleased with your donations: Thanks to all who participated in sending donations for the basket. There were so many contributions, we made 2! It made our job pretty easy!

The fourth grade teachers are asking students to bring in a one dollar donation for a holiday project they will complete at school. All we can tell you is that you will love it!

The weather is finally getting cooler! Along with the colorful leaves, and the time change, comes a collection of jackets left behind in the classroom. Please talk with your student about being responsible for their belongings, we don't want anyone to be caught without their coat on a cold morning!

Our Thanksgiving lunch will be on Wednesday, 11/15, at 11:10 in the cafeteria. Students will be eating in the classroom at the usual time on Tuesday and Thursday.

We have finished explorers in social studies. We have begun working on force and motion in science, and will be learning about simple machines, as well. We had wonderful experiences with simple machines in our last science lab. In math we finished multiplicative comparison, and began learning divisibility rules. Ask your child about the factor posters they are creating with partners. We will be learning more about prime and composite numbers, followed by multi-digit multiplication. In reading, we will be learning about text structure. In writing we have begun research on weather events for informational writing. We didn't have spelling this week, but we will next week.

Student leadership has organized a canned food collection drive called Thanks For Giving. Students are encouraged to bring in cans that will placed in a box next to each classroom. There is a competition to see which class can collect the most.

Our room moms would like to share the following information:
Hello Mrs. Stewart's and Mrs. Sattelmeier’s Class!
The Holiday Shoppe Committee is busy putting together a wonderful event for our children on December 9th.  In addition to the Holiday Shoppe, this year they are having a raffle for parents with some wonderful gift baskets and other goodies, a craft/vendor fair, entertainment, breakfast and some fun activities for the kids.
The Committee is asking for each grade level to put together two themed baskets for the raffle.  All the money made from this event will go towards doing many wonderful things for our children and our school.  This year our class theme is Movie Night!!  We are asking for donations of family friendly DVDs, candy, microwave popcorn, or cash donations towards movie theatre gift cards.  Please send all these items in by December 1st so that the other room moms and I can get the baskets completed by December 5th.  Please remember the baskets must not contain any perishables or alcohol of any kind.  I really appreciate your support and look forward to seeing all of you at this year's Addison Holiday Shoppe.   Please contact Jennifer (, 404-668-7875) or Nancy (, 770-712-0537) with any questions.
Thank you!

Jennifer Cowan and Nancy Hart

Whew! Although the days were short for students this week, we tried to get as much accomplished as we could. We are finished with the Native Americans unit, and just began learning about European Explorers. A new Quizlet link has been added to Love That Link, as well as exploration maps links. We have finished perimeter, and will begin 2 digit multiplication next week.

We enjoyed meeting with our families during conference week and bragging on our students. We are so grateful for the support you provide to make sure our students are as successful as possible. It really does take a village!

Amazingly, we have finished the first nine week grading period of this school year! This week we meet for conferences. Students will be released early each day this week. We have already made a good start to the second quarter. We are finishing up perimeter in math, and will test this week on Thursday. Next, we will be moving on to two digit multiplication. We finished taking notes and learning about Native Americans. We had a quiz last Friday on the first three tribes covered. On Wednesday, we will test on all of the tribes. Remember: Where they lived determined how they lived. Students can study their social studies journal, view the Native American power point on Love That Link, and look at the Kwakiutl, Hopi, and Inuit Thinglink on Mrs. Sattelmeier's blog. There will be no spelling words or test this week.
This will be Red Ribbon Week.
If you haven't signed up for parentvue yet, you will be able to when you come for conferences. There will be a table set up in the hall near the entrance.
Be sure to order items with your child's artwork from Square 1, if you haven't already. Ms. Stoddard will be sending a flyer home this week with information.

Three of our adorable
students modeling poetry reading. This was part of a lesson on identifying theme.
One of our students participated in the hair painting tent at the Addison Fall Carnival. Can you guess who it is?

Mrs. Sattelmeier had a wonderful time spraying hair color, painting nails, and assisting with tattoos at the carnival last Friday! It was great fun to see some of our students and their families enjoying the activities.

We have been working on subtracting with regrouping in math. We have also been working on rounding and estimating. A link for a Khan Academy video has been added to Love That Link for subtraction with regrouping, across zero.

We will have a test Friday, 9/22, on weather in science. Students will need to know weather instruments, weather fronts, how to read a weather map, freezing and boiling points (temperature) in Celsius and Fahrenheit, and how the water cycle works. To prepare, students can use their science textbook, science journals, the study guide we completed in class on 9/20, as well as the weather quizlet, water cycle quizlet, and weather fronts model links on Love That Link.

There will be a test on Theme in reading on Friday. Students can use classwork examples, sing the song, and use the study guide/practice pages we did in class today (9/20)to study.

If you have not signed up for Remind, but would like to, let Mrs. Sattelmeier know, and she will send an instruction page home with your child.

We survived Irma!

Some of us were a little confused about what day it was today, it seemed like a Monday rather than a Wednesday! Thankfully, everyone was safe and mostly unaffected by the storm.
We have been working on multi-digit subtraction across zeros in math. In reading, we've been learning about theme. Ask your child to sing the song for you. There will be another reading test on Friday. It will be a grade level passage with vocabulary questions, sequencing, and comprehension questions.
Since we have such a short week, we decided to postpone the spelling test until the following Friday, 9/22. There is a link for Spelling City on Mrs. Sattelmeier's blog. Students can use the activities for additional practice.
Our water cycle test will be this Friday. Check out the water cycle Quizlet link for vocabulary practice in Love That Link. The test will include the steps in the process of the water cycle, vocabulary, types of precipitation, and at what temperature water boils/freezes.

Our students had a terrific day of learning at the Fire Safety Village. Pictures to follow! Please talk with your student about continuing to make good choices as we finish up this school year. Some are having a difficult time staying on task and controlling talking. Let's finish strong! Mr. Golden has asked us to post this link to the sign up genius for field day. This is always great fun for the students.

Congratulations to these hard working students who achieved honor roll for the second quarter!

Our students enjoyed the in-house field trip last week. The speaker portrayed a girl who had come to North America on the Mayflower. She did a great job of sharing what life was like for the families as they began to build a life in the New World.

We will be finishing up interpreting remainders in math this week. We will revisit division, then we will begin working on fractions. In reading we have been focusing on inferring. Our current writing project is an opinion piece that includes knowledge about life in colonial times.
There will be a test on sound and light this Wednesday. Students can use their study guides, science journal, and quizlet to prepare for the test. This is the link for the sound and light quizlet:
